My Reflections

Looking at the tremendous damage that the earthquake has done to the Athens, I am sure that if they can reduce the damage caused by installing warning systems. The warning systems can warn the public, government or emergency agencies to take quick action. They can also build the buildings more "earthquake proof", probably by adding special features which makes the building more stable.

Government Takes Action

Thankfully, the State Government's reaction to the earthquake was prompt, immdiately taking action by supplying free assistance, such as gratuities, loans, etc. The State also supplied Special Service for those with a building damaged by the earthquake.

Crustal Plates Movement linked to the Disaster

What caused the terrible earthquake which took over a hundred lives? The African Plate immersing under Greece, which is part of the Eurasion Plate at the speed of 5cm a year, caused the crushing of the Oceanic Plate, resulting in an earthquake.

Report: Massive Earthquake hits Athens, Greece

It was on September 7, 1999 where the deadliest natural disaster in almost half a century occured in the Athens, Greece. The 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the capital at approximately 2.50pm local time, when it became the most costly earthquake in 20 years. There was a total of 149 deaths, and more that 12,000 were treated for injuries. 50,000 were left homeless, their houses destroyed. About 100 buildings collapsed, including 3 major factories, trapping the unexpected victims under the rubble, suffocating many to death.
